Playing through miserable weather conditions Thursday night, top-seeded Worthington and fourth-seeded seeded Mound-Westonka had their Section 2AA boys soccer match come down to penalty kicks.
After the Trojans and White Hawks completed 100 minutes of scoreless soccer -- two 40-minute halves and two 10-minute overtime periods -- it was the Trojans who were fully on target in the penalty kick shootout, winning that 4-1 to record a 1-0 triumph and advance to the sectional finals.
It was a match in which each team had its opportunities during an evening of rain, wind and chilly temperatures, but no one could break through until it ultimately mattered most. Worthington kicked first to start the shootout, and Jonathan Banegas put the ball in the net. After a Mound-Westonka player missed a shot high over the Trojan net, Carlos Castillo got the second shootout goal for WHS.
On the second White Hawks’ shot, goalkeeper Kaleb Knothe came up with a big save for Worthington, keeping Mound-Westonka off the scoreboard. Maqui Sandoval then made it 3-0 in the shootout with a goal, and after the White Hawks scored to stay alive, Charles Saydee made his penalty to clinch the Trojan triumph.
WHS, now 16-2 this season, will play third-seeded Mankato East at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in New Prague for a chance to return to the state tournament for a third consecutive year.
