WHS boys off to winning start with 'W' at Windom track and field meet

The Worthington Trojans boys track and field team won their season-opening meet in Windom Thursday, accumulating 136 points to take first among five schools.
Senior Tetlouch Gach, a state qualifier for the Trojans in the 110 hurdles, was victorious in that event Thursday as well as the 300 hurdles. Other event winners for WHS were Kaleb Watson in the 100 meters and Austin Kinser in the 200.
Dillon Zepeda Carranza took second in the 200 and third in the triple jump for the Trojans. Henok Ergicho was second in the long jump, and Thaw Wah was third in the 800.
Worthington's 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams all earned second-place finishes.
In girls competition in Windom, Jackson County Central finished atop the five-team race with 132 points. Windom Area was second at 98, and Worthington had 96.
Senior Madison Sieve had a good day for the Trojans, capturing both the 800- and 1600-meter races. Shayla Juarez was a winner in the long jump.
Emily Dahlquist took second in the 800 and third in the 1600 for WHS. Tiana Garcia finished third in the 200, and Juarez was third in 400.
Both Trojan teams will compete next Monday at a meet at SMSU in Marshall.

The Worthington High golf teams opened their seasons Thursday by losing to Luverne in chilly, difficult conditions at GreatLIFE Worthington.
In girls play, Luverne finished at 65-over-par as a team and the Trojans at plus-75. Claire Meyer was at +10 for WHS and was followed by Ashtyn Krohn at +17, Greta Mahlberg at +21 and Giselle Deleon at +27. Both Ellie Drost and Ava Schutz did not compete for the Trojans.
Among the boys, Luverne had a team score of 167 and Worthington was at 195. Cameron Krommendyk had the Trojans' low round at 46. He was followed by Tyson Petersen (49), Gerrit Larson (50) and Brody Pederson (50). Also playing were Hunter Heitkamp and Trey Milbrath, who each came in at 52.

The WHS baseball team opened its season Thursday with a 13-1 five-inning loss at home to St. Peter.
The Saints scored three unearned runs in the first, then tacked on four more in the second and an additional four in the third. The Trojans got their run in the third on singles by Christian Dailey, Dominic Pavelko and Austin Gruis.
St. Peter got their 13 runs on just seven hits. WHS plays a home doubleheader Saturday against Tri-City United.

Worthington dropped to 0-2 in softball Thursday by losing at St. Peter 26-2, with the Saints scoring 17 times in the third to wrap up the game. Katy Welch, Emma Hietbrink, Taylor Nickel and Macie Mahlberg had the Trojan hits.
