WHS boys in midst of tight competition at annual Trojan Relays

In Class AA Trojan Relays boys track and field competition on Tuesday, the top three teams in the final standings were separated by two points. Marshall finished with 138, followed by Fairmont at 137 and host Worthington with 136.
Jacari Swinea picked up a win for Worthington in the 100 meters, setting a personal record with a time of 11.30 seconds. Caleb Meyer won the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 4 inches, and the 4x100 relay quartet of Welbaka Morke, Juan Sandoval, Kevin Ramirez and Lucio Ramirez won with a time of 44.91.
Tetlouch Gach was second with a PR for the Trojans in the 110 hurdles and second in the 300 hurdles and second with a PR in the triple jump. Fanuel Wolday placed second in the 1600 meters and third with a PR in the 800. Morke was third with a PR in the long jump and fourth in the 100. Isaiah Bates was third in the 400, Thet Tay was third in the high jump and Christian Kleve was fourth with a PR in the discus. Hudson Scheepstra was fifth with PR in the 110 hurdles and fifth in the 300 hurdles.
In Class AA girls competition, Fairmont came out on top with 150 points followed by Marshall with 143.5. Worthington was fifth at 71.5.
Grace Bates had an outstanding day for the Trojans, capturing the long jump with a PR of 16 feet 6 inches and the triple jump with a PR of 33 feet, 4.75 inches. Other individual highlights included: Kenadie Thiner, third in the 1600, fourth in the 800 and fourth in the pole vault; Lauryn Ahlers, third in the pole vault; Bella Lazzu, fourth in the high jump; Madison Sieve, fifth in the 800 and sixth in the 1600; and Tiana Garcia, sixth with a PR in the triple jump.

The Worthington Trojans rallied from a 4-0 first inning deficit to take a one-run lead into the bottom of the seventh, but the host Luverne Cardinals scored twice to edge WHS 9-8 in a high school softball game Tuesday.
The Trojans tallied a pair of runs in the top of the second to cut Luverne's lead in half, but the Cardinals quickly answered with two of their own in the bottom of that inning. Worthington then got a pair of runs in the third to make it 6-4 and eventually moved ahead for the first time in the seventh by scoring twice more. Luverne, however, got an RBI groundout and run-scoring hit with two out to win it.
Hannah McNab connected for three doubles in the game for WHS, which fell to 5-12 on the season with the defeat. Emma Hietbrink, Katy Welch and Leah Nelson also connected for doubles as well.

The Worthington High boys golf team competed Tuesday at the Big South Conference championship meet at the Dacotah Ridge Golf Club in Morton and placed 12th out of 14 teams. The Trojans compiled a team score of 367; St. Peter won the meet at 312, followed by Marshall at 325.
Spenser Nickel had the lowest round of the day for WHS at 90, which put him in 32nd place among all individuals. Gerret Larson was right behind his teammate with a 91, and Ryan Dorcey and Cameron Krommendyk each had scores of 93. Also playing Tuesday for the Trojans were Ayden Stugelmeyer (95) and Ben Mahlberg (105).
Among other teams, Jackson County Central wound up in a tie for seventh place with Luverne.

In Section 2AA boys tennis action Tuesday, host and No. 2 seed Prior Lake beat No. 7 Worthington 7-0.
