Vinson's seven TD passes lead Bluejays to 46-14 home win

The Minnesota West Blue Jays football team evened their season record at 2-2 by rolling to a 46-14 victory over Minnesota North-Mesabi Range on Saturday afternoon at Trojan Field.


Quarterback Armon Vinson finished the game throwing seven touchdown passes. They included a 27-yarder to Talik Brooks, a 4-yarder to Marlon Fulker, a 48-yarder to Ethan Pridgen, a 30-yarder and 32-yarder to Allen Hollman Jr., and a 53-yarder and 28-yarder to Tavion Jackson. 


The Bluejays led 32-7 at halftime. Vinson's total passing yardage for the game was not immediately unavailable.


Minnesota West, ranked third nationally, will be on the road next Saturday for a game at winless Central Lakes in Brainerd.

The Lady Jay volleyball team, meanwhile, earned three more victories over the weekend. Minnesota West blanked Riverland by scores of 25-8, 25-9, 25-10 on Friday, then won Saturday 3-2 against Ellsworth Community College by scores of 25-20, 26-24, 23-25, 13-25, 15-4 and 3-0 against North Iowa Area Community College by scores of 25-18, 25-16, 25-20.


Cumulative statistics from the three weekend matches had Sadie Krahling leading the way in kills with 32 and ace serves with four. Kadyn Paulson had 44 digs and Krahling added 40. Myah Dausel had three aces — all in the Riverland match — and Aleah Wagner and Liv Locke each had two aces against Riverland as well. Kylee Larsen picked up four blocks in the match against NIACC. Kate Slettum passed for a total of 92 set assists on the weekend.


The Lady Jays, ranked third nationally, are now 18-1 overall.

The WHS volleyball team went 2-2 Saturday during a tournament in Austin. The Trojans topped Albert Lea 2-1 by scores of 25-5, 22-25, 15-7; lost to Mankato East 2-0 by scores of 25-17, 25-21; fell to Red Wing 2-0 by scores of 25-7, 29-27; and beat New Ulm 25-22, 25-19.


It was Kaitlyn Mulder leading the Trojans in kills during their first two matches, totaling 15. Natalia Martinez has a team-high six against Red Wing, and Alaina Feit five against New Ulm.


Kamyrn Olson collected 42 digs over the course of Saturday's four matches. Mara Thier was sharp serving, as she recorded seven aces in the Albert Lea match alone. As usual, Natya Khamphanh set the table for the WHS hitters; her highest set assists match total on the day was 32 against Albert Lea.


Worthington, now 6-5, will play at Class 3A state No. 1 Marshall on Tuesday.

In high school boys soccer Saturday, the Trojans played at Willmar, and the Cardinals and WHS finished in a 2-2 draw. Worthington, now 7-3-1, will play at Fairmont tonight and at St. James/Windom/Madelia on Tuesday.

The Albert Lea Tigers came into Worthington on Friday night and blew out the Trojans in WHS' homecoming football game, 42-0.


Albert Lea, now 4-0 on the season, scored 21 points in the first quarter and 21 more in the second, The Trojans were limited to minus-21 yards of total offense in the first half. In the game, the Tigers accumulated 421 yards of offense compared to Worthington's minus-16.


Brecken Wacholz was the dominant player on the field Friday night. He ran for the game's first two touchdowns — scoring on rushes of 15 and 37 yards — and then passed for the next four TDs. He completed 7 of 10 passes for 181 yards overall while running for 88 yards.


Fino Noeno, Hyrum Bates, Austin Gruis and Brayden Raymo made six tackles apiece to lead WHS defensively. The Trojans are on the road to play at New Ulm this coming Friday.
