Two die in Dickinson County, Iowa crash

A Jackson woman and her son died as a result of a two-vehicle crash Saturday morning in Dickinson County, Iowa.


The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash, which was reported at 11:28 a.m. at the intersection of 120th Street and U.S. 71. According to the report, a 2008 Hyundai operated by Mariah Nelson, 29, of Jackson was eastbound on 120th Street, went through the stop sign and collided with a 2011 GMC Sierra operated by Allen Weinzetl, 63, of Jackson that was southbound on U.S. 71. Both vehicles rolled and came to rest southeast of the intersection.


Nelson and her 1-year-old son were killed in the crash.. Nelson’s daughters, ages 5 and 6, were taken to Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake with incapacitating injuries and later transferred to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls.


Weinzetl was transported to Lakes Regional Healthcare with non-incapacitating injuries while his passenger -- Teresa Chonko, 58, -- was transported to Lakes Regional Healthcare with incapacitating injuries and later transferred to Avera Hospital in Sioux Falls.


The accident remains under investigation by the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol. Among the agencies assisting were the Spirit Lake Police Department, Spirit Lake Ambulance, Estherville Ambulance, Superior Fire & Rescue, Spirit Lake Fire Department and First Responders, and Milford Fire & Rescue.
