Trojans win gymnastics opener, earn first boys hoops win of season

The Worthington High School gymnastics team captured its season opener Friday night as they bested Waseca 138.55 to 128.875.


The Trojans' Bella Lazzu was first in the all-around competition with 35.5 points. She placed first on the vault with a score at 9.075, first on the beam with 9.25 and first on the floor at 9.175. Taking second in the all-around was Lucy Thier, who had a total score of 34.6, including a first-place score of 8.575 on the bars.


WHS took the top five places on the floor, as Thier, Jada Milbrath, Brooklyn Dykstra and Marley Phomsatry followed Lazzu. Milbrath was also second on the bars. Phomsatry and Olivia Bullerman placed right behind Lazzu in the vault event.

Isaiah Schroeder scored 25 points and added six rebounds and five assists Friday night as the WHS boys basketball team won its first game of the year by beating Tri-City United on the road, 78-40.


Tetlouch Gach and Treyson Meinders each had 12 points and Kason Spartz added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Trojans, who are now 1-1. Worthington's defense forced 31 turnovers and 23 steals. The team also moved the ball well on offense, accumulating 17 assists.

In girls hockey over the weekend, the Trojans were on the road and beat Prairie Centre 7-1 on Friday and lost to Detroit Lakes 6-2 on Saturday.


Breeta Johnson and Tayler Nickel each scored a pair of goals on Friday as WHS won its third game in a row. Kiley Platt, Audrey Johnson and Madilyn Polz all had a goal apiece as the Trojans beat Prairie Centre for the second time in a week. Macie Mahlberg had 12 saves for Worthington.


On Saturday, Detroit Lakes led 3-0 after the first period and 5-1 after two. The Trojans now have a record of 3-6 this season.

In boys hockey Saturday, Worthington was defeated on the road at Red Wing 8-1. Ryker Thier had the lone goal for the Trojans, now 0-4.

The third-ranked Minnesota West Lady Jays posted a pair of road victories on the basketball court this weekend, beating Central Lakes 78-49 on Friday and Gogebic Community College 89-67 on Saturday.


On Friday, Payton Riemers and Katrina Schutz scored 18 points apiece and Sadie Krahling added 16. Riemers had a team-high seven rebounds, and Schutz and Maddie Kamm chipped in with five steals apiece.


On Saturday, Krahling came off the bench to top Minnesota West in scoring with 28 points. Izzy Klumper had 16 points, Schutz had 15 and Riemers 12. Kamm had seven points, seven rebounds and nine assists.

In men's basketball, the Bluejays dropped both of their weekend games, falling Friday at Central Lakes 98-84 in overtime and then losing Saturday at Gogebic 82-53.


Central Lakes earned the Friday triumph by outscoring Minnesota West 16-2 in OT. Kewone Jones had 22 points to lead the Bluejays and De'Shaundis Moore added 19. Austin Florence led the rebounding effort with eight; Calvin Flood passed for eight assists.


Flood's 11 points was highest for Minnesota West on Saturday. The Bluejays trailed by just nine at the half, but the second half was all Gogebic.

The Worthington Trojans girls basketball team was defeated at home Saturday afternoon by Tri-City United, 72-50, dropping WHS to 2-2 on the season.


The Titans grabbed an early 10-0 lead in the first two minutes, but WHS went a 9-0 surge to get within 10-9. Tri-City United would then move ahead 19-11, but five consecutive points from Mia McNab put the Trojans down by three, 19-16. The Titans, though, soon went on 13-0 run and led by 38-25 at the half.


Savannah Dale led Worthington with 18 points. Kierra Reetz and McNab contributed nine points apiece.
