Trojans topple Tigers in 2-0 boys soccer triumph

The Worthington Trojans' boys soccer team picked up a huge conference win at home Tuesday night as they blanked Marshall 2-0 in a game that started early and ended early due to weather.

Tuesday's match had been scheduled for a 7 p.m. start but wound up getting underway at about 6:50 in an attempt to beat a thunderstorm that had been forecast to reach the area by 8:30 p.m. Ultimately, at about 8:10 p.m., lightning was visible over Trojan Field, and the players were immediately ordered off. After a brief discussion, it was agreed that rather than wait a minimum of half hour — which is required after lightning — the match would be declared over with 19:07 still remaining on the second-half clock.

Andy Guzman scored both of Worthington's goals. His first came with 17:04 left before halftime, as he got a shot past Marshall goalkeeper Jameson Cornell — who tried to break up the play just in front of him — to snap the scoreless tie. He then scored again with 3:55 left before the break, making it his second match in a row with a pair of goals.

Worthington was able to dictate play most of the way and kept its goalkeeper, Adrian Flores, from being seriously tested. As a result, the Trojans moved to 3-2 overall. They'll next host St. James/Windom/Madelia at 7 p.m. Thursday.
