Trojans open girls hockey season with home loss to Mankato West

The Worthington Trojans girls hockey team opened their season Tuesday night at home and were defeated by Mankato West 9-1.
The Trojans started the game strong and took a 1-0 edge with 4:29 left in the opening period as Alianna Bristow scored an unassisted goal. The Scarlets answered with a pair of goals to grab a 2-1 lead by the first intermission. WHS then opened the second period slowly but still managed to trail by just 3-1 after two periods of action.
The third period did not go well for the Trojans, as Mankato West scored six times while outshooting Worthington 16-2. The Scarlets fired a total of 34 shots at WHS goalie Macie Mahlberg on the night; the Trojans ended the game with just eight shots on net.
WHS has another home game Thursday when it entertains Austin at 6 p.m.
In other area girls hockey action Tuesday, Minnesota River blanked visiting Windom 10-0 and host Albert Lea topped Luverne 6-5.
