Trojans' Meyer ties for third in high jump at state Class AA meet

Worthington High School Caleb Meyer, competing in the boys' high jump at the Minnesota Class AA track and field meet on Thursday, finished in a tie for third place in the event.


Meyer cleared his first two jumps of the day and then succeeded at 6 feet, 2 inches on his second try. He then cleared 6 feet, 4 inches on his first attempt before failing in three tries to jump 6 feet, 6 inches.


Andrew Russell of Mathomedi won the high jump with a class record effort of 6 feet, 7 inches. Meyer, who just concluded his sophomore year, was competing at state for the second straight time; he placed fifth in 2024.


Also in the boys' high jump, Thet Tay finished in a tie for 27th place. He cleared his first leap of the day at 5 feet, 10 inches but failed on his next attempts.


Competing for Worthington in the triple jump was just-graduated senior Grace Bates, who placed 15th at 34 feet, 9.25 inches. The victor, also setting a class record, was Ayisat Adebayo of Simley at 40 feet, 3.75 inches.


Another Trojan in action Thursday was just-graduated senior Fanuel Wolday, who ran in the 1600 meters. Wolday  placed 15th in a time of 4 minutes, 33.52 seconds. The victor, Jack Leuer of Big Lake, also set a class record, coming in at 4:11.25.

Neil Kuehl, representing Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda/Westbrook-Walnut Grove on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Minnesota Class A Boys Golf Meet at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker, finished in a tie for 80th at 185. Kuehl had a 90 on Tuesday and 95 on Wednesday.

The Worthington Trojans baseball team gathered for their awards announcements on Wednesday. The following players and their awards are as follows:


Dawson Svalland –- Most Valuable Player. Svalland posted a .348 batting average and a team leading .482 on-base percentage. He had an OPS of .939. His hustle, enthusiasm and team spirit lifted the team throughout the season.


Manny Saravia –- Trojan Award for Career Achievements. Saravia capped off his two-year varsity career excelling not only in a number of offensive categories but was also a valuable and versatile player on the field. He posted a career .355 batting average and led the team in hits and, runs scored in each season. He recorded only nine strikeouts in 138 plate appearances over the past two seasons.


Chase Byrne -– Offensive Player of the Year. After missing the entire 2024 season due to injury, Byrne led the team with a .365 batting average, knocked in 17 runs and had three home runs. He led the team in slugging (.810), had an on-base percentage of .453 and a team-leading OPS of 1.263.


Max Ostrem -– Pitcher of the Year. Max was the team's number one starter throughout the season, pitching deep into games and recording many strikeouts.


Wyatt Petersen – Defensive Play of the Year. Peterson roamed the outfield from his center field position and tracked down many balls with a number of spectacular catches.


Ethan Anderson –- Junior Varsity Player of the Year


Trojans head coach Steve Robinson noted that while the Trojans won fewer games than they hoped for, the team's errors dropped from more than four per game in 2024 to two per game in 2025. They also recorded 40 fewer strikeouts this season.


While WHS will graduate four seniors this year (Saravia, Byrne, Ostrem and Svalland), a strong core of undergraduates will return for next season. Junior Dalton Larson and sophomores Austin Gruis, Wyatt Petersen, Dom Pavelko and Logan Kerkaert will be back, along with freshmen Anderson, Wilson Mahlberg and Brayden Raymo.
