Trojans get second straight shutout win in boys soccer

The Worthington Trojans' boys soccer team won its third straight and picked up its second straight shutout on Thursday as they defeated St. James/Windom/Madelia 5-0.


Andy Guzman scored three times for the Trojans and has now tallied seven goals during the three-game WHS win streak. Kain Thepmontry and Diego Alvarado also had a goal each.


Worthington will look to its streak on Saturday afternoon when they host the Austin Packers at 1 p.m.

In girls soccer, senior co-captain Pay Poe scored the Trojans' first goal of the season in a 4-1 loss to St. James/Windom/Madelia at Island Park.

Host Worthington won the first game, but Jackson County Central roared back to take the next three as the Huskies beat the Trojans in a high school girls volleyball match. Game scores were 17-25, 25-16, 25-9, 25-14.


The Trojans were behind 5-1 early in game one, but then took control. The rest of the night, however, belonged primarily to JCC, with both Madelyn Rowe and Paylin Sether finishing in double digits in kills. The Huskies are now 3-1 on the fall.


For the Trojans, now 2-2, Alaina Feit and Lauren Nixon had eight kills apiece. Suzanna Shwe had 10 digs and Kamryn Olson nine. Natya Khamphanh served a pair of aces.

In cross country, the Worthington boys and girls teams competed at the Panther Invitational in Tracy. Asrat Bonnett led the Trojans by placing sixth with a time of 18:01.57, and teammate Austin Kinser was slightly more than three seconds behind him in eighth. Andrew Olague, Braddock Marquardt and Jose Chavez Vega were 31st, 32nd and 33rd, and Ryan Phelps 36th.


Aiden Appel and Matthew Stapek, both of Murray County Central/Fulda, were fourth and fifth, respectively to lead their team. Adrian-Ellsworth's Darwin Demarrias-Jansma was 11th to top the Dragons. MCC/Fulda was second in the team standings behind Windom Area, and Worthington was third.


In the girls race, Laiken Farris of Murray County Central/Fulda won the race with a time of 20:20.69, and teammate Mara Clarke was third. Olivia Bullerman's 16th-place finish was tops for Adrian-Ellsworth.


Finishing right behind Bullerman in 17th was Worthington's Madison Sieve. The Trojans had Emily Dahlquist come in 25th, Anna Gordon in 43rd, Ariana Schettler in 49th, Myranda Widboom in 50th and Neveah Roesner in 56th.
