Trojans' boys soccer team cruises to 8-1 triumph

Jose Chavez and Danny Banegas scored two goals apiece and other WHS players each had one goal as the Trojans’ boys soccer team dominated visiting St. Peter in an 8-1 victory on Tuesday night.


Chavez scored with 26:32 left in the first half to make it 1-0 Worthington, and Jonathan Banegas added a goal a little more than three minutes later for a 2-0 lead. That would be the score at the half, and the Trojans then went on to score six times in the second 40 minutes. Adding single goals during the match for WHS were Andy Guzman, Carlos Castillo and Hugo Garcia.


The Trojans are now ranked fifth in the state Class AA poll and are 3-0 on the season.

In girls soccer Tuesday, the Trojans dropped to 1-2 on the season as they lost 6-0 at St. Peter. Coach Anne Greenway said the girls played well and that Karen Hser had a great night in goal.

The Worthington Trojans girls tennis team was defeated by River Valley 7-0 in Sleepy Eye. Each of the matches was decided in straight sets.
