Trojan wrestlers pick up win in 3AA team tournament

The Worthington Trojans wrestling team picked up a big win Thursday in the Section 3AA Team Tournament as they edged Fairmont-Martin County West 37-35 to advance to Saturday's Final Four.


Trojans coach Kirk Feit remarked afterward that his squad was able to get the matchups it wanted and that several of his younger wrestlers came through. It was the first win for the WHS wrestling team over Fairmont/MCW since 2017.


Dominic Larson of Worthington didn't take long to win his 107-pound match, earning

a victory by fall in just 41 seconds. Sam Dagel won by technical fall, 18-1, at 114, and Kian Ling won by fall in 5:29 at 121 pounds.


Christopher Santiago Zapata earned six more points for the Trojans thanks to a forfeit at 127, and Miguel Moreno won by fall in 3:37 for WHS at 133. Dalton Larson earned a 9-4 decision at 152, and Chase Byrne picked up a 17-1 triumph by technical fall at 215.


The Trojans will wrestle Marshall at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in one sectional semifinal, while New Ulm meets Dawson-Boyd in the other. The finals will follow; all the action will take place in Marshall.

In Section 3A high school wrestling Thursday night, top-seeded Jackson County Central won at home 66-8 over St. James-Madelia. The Huskies will next wrestle Pipestone Area, which topped Wabasso 45-29, in the section semifinals at 12:30 p.m. in Slayton.


Also in Section 3A, Adrian Area earned a 41-27 victory over Redwood Valley and Fulda/Murray County Central slipped past Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove 31-29. The Dragons and Warriors also meet at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Slayton.

Dominic Pavelko scored Worthington's first goal and final goal Thursday night and the Trojans concluded their boys hockey regular season with a 4-2 win over visiting Windom.


Pavelko scored on a power play at 4:57 of the first period, with assists going to Trenton Chantharath and Spenser Nickel, to put WHS out in front 1-0. Andrei Rivera answered with a power play goal of his own to tie the game nearly four minutes later.


Rivera picked up his second goal of the game at 9:46 of the second period to put the Eagles ahead, but a Lucas Hohenstein shot from near the blue line knotted things up at 12:47. Mason Onnen was credited with an assist on that goal.


Chantharath put Worthington ahead by scoring unassisted on a two-man advantage at 6:38 of the third period, and Pavelko got the clincher at 14:35 on an assist from Nickel. WHS outshot the Eagles 32-20 to improve to 7-18 on the season; Windom is 6-18-1. 


Both teams now await seedings for the Section 3A Tournament, which begins next Tuesday.

In high school basketball Thursday, Worthington traveled to Luverne to compete in a girls-boys doubleheader. The Cardinals wound up taking a sweep, as Luverne won the girls game 66-46 over the Trojans as well as the boys matchup, 94-72.
