Trojan softball team gets sixth seed in Section 2AAA tournament

The Section 2AAA high school girls softball tournament brackets were announced Monday, and the Worthington Trojans received the No. 6 seed.
Mankato East was awarded the No. 1 seed in the seven-team tournament and receives a first-round bye. Mankato West is the No. 2 seed and will take on No. 7 seed Marshall at 5 p.m. Thursday. All games in the tourney will take place at Caswell Park in North Mankato.
Worthington, meanwhile, will also play at 5 p.m. Thursday against third-seeded New Ulm. The Eagles have defeated the Trojans in both of the teams' meetings this spring.
Thursday's other 5 p.m. matchup has No. 4 seed St. Peter taking on fifth-seeded Albert Lea. The winner of that matchup plays Mankato East at approximately 7 p.m.
The winner of the Mankato West vs. Marshall game will play the victor of the New Ulm vs. Worthington matchup at approximately 7 p.m. as well. The losers of those two games will also face off against each other at 7.
Play in the double-elimination tournament continues on Saturday and is scheduled to conclude on Thursday, May 29.

The Worthington Trojans boys and girls golf teams had been scheduled to host multiple teams in a home meet Monday, but that event was cancelled due to rain and will not be made up. The Big South Conference boys and girls track and field meet scheduled for Tuesday in St. Peter has been moved to Thursday.

The Worthington Cubs put together two seven-run innings on Sunday afternoon and came away with a 20-1 road victory over the Lakefield Frogs.
The Cubs, who are now 3-1 on the season, collected a total of 21 hits in the game. Daniel Castro had four of them, as he picked up three singles and a double. Tyler Linder and Jake Brandner both had three hits apiece — Linder had three singles and Brandner two singles and a double. Brandner drove in five runs in the game, and Castro added four RBIs of his own.
Tucker Brandner pitched the first five innings for Worthington, allowing three hits and the lone Frogs run while walking three and striking out 13. Jake Brandner struck out the side in the sixth, and Blake Ahrenstorff pitched a hitless seventh with one strikeout.
The Cubs' game that had been scheduled for the past Friday night against the Milroy Yankees was postponed due to inclement weather; a makeup date has yet to be announced. Worthington will next play on Sunday, May 25th, when it takes on the visiting Luverne Redbirds at 2 p.m. at the Worthington Middle School Field.

In another amateur baseball game Sunday, the Jackson Bulls were edged on the road 10-8 by the Hadley Buttermakers.
Jackson scored six runs in the top of the seventh to take an 8-3 lead, but Hadley got one in the seventh and six in the eighth. The Bulls are 1-1 and visit the Blue Earth Pirates on Wednesday.
