Trojan gymnastics now 3-0 in meets; girls hockey squad wins 4-0

The Worthington Trojans gymnastics team made it three-for-three on the season so far by winning a dual meet on the road Friday at St. Peter 137.825-119.05. 


The Trojans' Isabella Lazzu captured first place in the all around for the third time in three outings with a total score of 34.625. Right behind her in second place was teammate Brooklyn Dysktra, who took part in all four events for the first time this winter and had 33.725.


Lazzu took first on the vault with a score of 9.225, and was followed by Marley Phomsatry of WHS at 9.1. Dykstra had an 8.95 in the event and another Trojan, Lucy Thier, had an 8.9.


It was Thier taking first place in the floor exercise with a score of 8.875, just in front of Dysktra's 8.8, and Phomastry also had 8.725. On the bars, Thier was also the top performer with a score of 8.15, with Jada Milbrath second at 8.075 and Lazzu third at 8.05.


Lazzu was top placer for the Trojans on the beam as she was second at 9.05. Milbrath, Claire Meyer and Dykstra all scored 8.7.


WHS will next compete in a meet Tuesday at Pipestone Area.

The Worthington Trojans girls hockey team improved their season record to 6-7 with a 4-0 Saturday victory at Morris Area-Benson.


Breeta Johnson scored in the first period to get the Trojans on the board. Catlyn Freking scored on an assist from Sydnie Van Briesen and Victoria Bush got a goal on assist from Kiley Platt to help Worthington to a 3-0 edge after two periods. Taylor Nickel got WHS goal No. 4 on a feed from Madelyn Cummings in the third.


The Trojan girls will host New Prague at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Worthington Ice Arena.

In boys hockey, WHS went 0-2, losing games on the road both Friday and Saturday to fall to 1-7 on the year.


On Friday night, the Trojans were tied with Prairie Centre 2-2 after only a little more than three minutes of first-period action, but the home team would soon gain control and win 13-5. Scoring goals in the game for WHS were Ryker Thier, Kaden Khamphanh, Hunter Heitkamp, Aaden Wagner and Dominic Pavelko.

On Saturday, it was Morris Area/Benson defeating the Trojans 6-2. Pavelko scored one goal on an assist from Heitkamp. Pavelko and Lucas Hohenstein assisted on a Heitkamp goal for the other WHS score.

In boys basketball Friday, Worthington played host to New Ulm and was defeated 81-52. In girls basketball, New Ulm's Brooklyn Lewis scored a school-record 43 points to go along with 10 rebounds and nine steals as the Eagles beat the visiting Trojans, 101-29. The Trojan girls are now 2-6; the boys are 1-5.
