Trojan golf teams pick up Friday home course wins

The Worthington Trojans won their final boys golf meet of the season on Friday, topping Windom Area 173-178.


It was seniors Andrew Mulder and Logan Powers both shooting rounds of 42 to lead the Trojans. Spenser Nickel carded a 44 and Wesley Widboom had a 45 to complete Worthington’s scoring. For Windom Area, senior Eli Lund earned medalist honors with a 39.


“It was a fun last meet for our seniors,” Trojans coach Paul Barduson said. “ It was nice for everyone to play well as we head into conference and section play.”


In girls golf, WHS shot a combined team score of 218 as it also defeated Windom Area on Meet the Trojans Day. Ada Lund of Windom Area was the medalist with a 45. Shooting scoring rounds for the Trojans were Madison Beckmann with 46, Claire Meyer with 53, Claire Mahlberg with 55 and Peyton Nickel with 62.

It was the Kaden Guida show Friday afternoon as St. Peter’s baseball team swept a doubleheader at Worthington, 20-2 and 2-0.


Guida was the starting pitcher in the first game, throwing the first five innings and allowing just one hit while walking two and striking out six. He also smashed a pair of home runs and a single, finishing with five RBIs.


St. Peter made the opener considerably more lopsided by scoring 13 runs in the top of the sixth. Worthington got its lone runs in the bottom of the sixth when Manny Saravia was hit by a pitch and later scored on a double steal, and Tucker Brandner walked and scored on a Mathias Noble triple. A Noble single in the fourth was the only other Trojan hit.


In game two, Guida threw the first four innings and allowed no hits and no walks – one WHS hitter reached on an error -- while striking out five. The Trojans’ lone hit came with just one remaining, as Max Ostrem singled off the glove of a diving St. Peter left fielder.

The Worthington High softball team went 0-3 Saturday in a tournament at Jackson County Central.


The Trojans allowed 10 first-inning runs to New York Mills before rallying and falling just short, 10-8. Abby Linder connected for two singles and a double for WHS, Bailey Ponto had a double and single, and Macie Mahlberg, Emma Hietbrink, Sydnie Van Briesen and Breeta Johnson all had two singles apiece,


Against Albert Lea, Worthington was down 5-1 through 3½ innings and a rally against came up just short. Hannah McNab led WHS with a single, triple and home run. Madi Polz had two doubles and a single, and Marin Pederson had three base hits.


In the day’s third game for the Trojans, JCC won 13-6. Maddie Petersen had the biggest offensive highlight for Worthington with a home run.
