The Worthington Trojans girls golf team placed third Monday in the first Big South event of the spring season in Marshall.
It was Redwood Valley coming out on top with a team score of 190, followed by Marshall at 195 and Worthington at 209. Redwood Valley also had the day’s medalist as Mila Jenniges shot a 38; Marshall’s Dayton Webskowski was right behind at 39.
For the Trojans, Claire Mahlberg had the low round at 49; that was good enough to place her fifth overall. Claire Meyer was right behind her with a round of 50, while Madison Beckmann carded a 53 and Regan Schafer had a 57. Payton Nickel also competed and had a round of 63.
In boys goif, Worthington had a tough day and placed sixth in the Big South event at Redwood Falls with a team total of 189. Luverne and Marshall both finished with low cumulative scores of 154.
Said Trojans coach Paul Barduson: “We didn’t have our best games today and have to continue to find ways to play well at away courses. The boys had good attitudes and have been working hard, so it will come in time.”
Henry Hartquist of Luverne was the medalist at 35 and teammate Owen Sudenga fired a 37. For the Trojans, Logan Powers shot a 40 to place 11th among individuals. Andrew Mulder was next at 43, and Spenser Nickel and Gerret Larson each had 53s.

The visiting Worthington Trojans and Pipestone Arrows went to extra innings Monday evening before the Arrows ultimately emerged with a 15-14, nine-inning victory.
Statistical leaders weren’t immediately available, but WHS head coach Steve Robinson noted that the Trojans were undone by 10 errors. With the setback, Worthington dropped to 3-5 on the season.
The Trojans are scheduled to be idle until Friday, when they head to Jordan. Robinson, however, said it’s possible that the game could be rescheduled to Wednesday because of the high likelihood of rain on Friday.

In the opener, the Bluejays’ Fernando Marte went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs to lead the offense. Minnesota West was up 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, but that’s when Western Tech started to rally, and the Cavaliers wound up with a walk-off win in the bottom of the seventh.
In game two, Axell Espino and Ridge Imhofer both went 3-for-5 with two RBIs for the Bluejays, with Imhofer blasting a home run. Joe Zhu and Haruta Endo each had a single and double as Minnesota West never trailed and banged out 15 hits. Jordan Bauer threw a complete game on the mound, surrendering just three hits.
