Trojan girls suffer hoops loss on road at Mankato West

Mankato West led Worthington 30-18 at halftime and held on to defeat the visiting Trojans 50-44 in high school girls basketball Tuesday night.


New Gora scored 11 of her team-best 14 points in the second half for Worthington, which dropped to 0-2 on the season. Janessa Hammann was right behind with 13 points, while Pham Gora contributed seven – all of those coming in the second half.


For Mankato West, which was playing in its season opener, Tucker Downs led the way offensively with 16 points, and Ella Mullenbach and Romo Smith chipped in with 10 apiece.


Worthington next plays at 2:30 p.m. Saturday against New Prague.

In girls hockey Tuesday, host New UIm turned back the Trojans 8-0 behind hat tricks from both Madelyn Olson and Mallory Anderson. The Eagles tallied three goals in both the first and third periods as well as two in the second. They outshot Worthington 54-7 on the game, with Trojans goaltender Macie Mahlberg making 46 saves.

In boys hockey, Worthington played at New Ulm as well and was defeated by a score of 7-0.
