Trojan girls hockey team wins while boys fall in OT

The Worthington Trojans girls hockey team picked up its fourth victory of the season Saturday as they topped visiting Morris-Benson Area 2-0.


Sydnie Van Briesen scored 6:30 into the opening period on assists from Addison Joens and Breeta Johnson. The other WHS goal came at 9:17 of the second period, as Johnson scored on an assist from Sadie Nickel.


The Trojans outshot Morris-Benson Area 24-5 in the game, with Macie Mahlberg picking up the shutout in net. Worthington is now 4-15-1 this season; the Storm are 0-16-2.


In the boys hockey game that followed, the Trojans were edged by Morris-Benson Area in overtime, 4-3.


Trailing 1-0 after the first period, Anthony Jimenez tied the score with an unassisted power play goal in the second stanza. The Storm took another one-goal lead, but Spenser Nickel's goal on an assist from Dominic Pavelko knotted things at two apiece.


Morris-Benson Area went up 3-2 in the third period, but once again the Trojans tied the score when Pavelko made it 3-3 thanks to assists from both Nickel and Jimenez.

Worthington outshot the Storm 34-29 for the game, with Trojan goalkeeper Tyson Petersen making 25 saves. WHS is 6-14; Morris-Benson Area is 8-12.

The Worthington High gymnastics team competed Saturday at the state Class A True Team meet in Big Lake, an event reserved for the state's 10 top-ranked teams, The Trojans scored 164.90 points and placed eighth; Detroit Lakes won with 177.725.


Brooklyn Dykstra was the highest finisher for WHS in the all-around competition, placing 24th. Marley Phomsatry was 29th on the vault and Dykstra 33rd. Jada Milbrath's 18th place was best for the Trojans on the bars, with Jordis Weber 29th and Kenadie Thiner 30th.


On the beam, Milbrath was 22nd, Phomsatry 24thand Weber 26th for Worthington. On the floor, Dykstra placed 22nd. The Trojans next compete Thursday in Redwood Falls.

Multiple high school wrestling teams from the region competed Friday at the HighWater Ethanol Invite in Lamberton.


For Adrian Area, placers at the event were Moe Erdman, third at 127 pounds, Travis Weiss, fourth at 133, Roberto Hernandez, fifth at 215, Charger Erlandson, sixth at 145 and Devin Mazza, sixth at 285.


For Jackson County Central, placers were Kayden Eller, second at 114 pounds, Dallas Gossen, sixth at 139 and Ryan Haley, sixth at 189. For Fulda/Murray County Central, Carson Klein was fourth at 189 pounds, Kaston Clarke fifth at 114, Isaiah Wolske fifth at 172 and Quentin Lewis sixth at 152. For Worthington, Chase Byrne was the lone placer, taking third at 189.

In a Friday night boys basketball game heard on 104.3 La Voz, visiting Sheldon overcame a 12-point third quarter deficit, rallying to edge Sibley-Ocheyedan 65-61.


Junior Drew Sauer was tough inside for the Orabs and lead all scorers with 27 points.  After the game was tied at 13-13 through one quarter, the Generals went up by eight before Sheldon bounced back to trail by just one at the half, 28-27. Isaac Wenthe of Sheldon nailed a three-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer to make it 49-49 entering the final 10 minutes.


Gavin Stanton led Sibley-Ocheyedan with 22 points. Alex Kruger chipped in with 16 and Dawson Kreykes had 10.

In other high school basketball action Friday night, the Worthington Trojan girls were beaten at Waseca 60-56. The Trojan boys lost at home to the 18-0 Bluejays, 85-55.
