Trojan girls hockey edged at home 2-1; WHS gymnasts post home triumph

The Worthington Trojans girls hockey team tied their game against visiting Fairmont in the third period, but the Cardinals got the go-ahead goal with 4:45 remaining and held on to post a 2-1 victory over WHS.
Worthington and Fairmont played to a scoreless tie through the first period. The night's first goal came at the 8:43 mark of the second period, when Haylyn Haycroft poked in a shot from up close for a 1-0 Cardinal edge. Assists were credited to both Lauren Bettin and Francesca Martin.
The Trojans got the equalizer at 7:22 of the third when Tayler Nickel scored on a power play with an assist from Breeta Johnson. Fairmont's Kynlee Beemer, however, scored to win it on an assist from Kennedy Murphy.
WHS, now 8-13, had lost at Fairmont 8-1 on Jan. 6. Trojan goalkeeper Macie Mahlberg had 33 saves. Her teammates had 15 shots on goal.
In boys hockey, Worthington played at the Cardinals and was defeated by a score of 11-6.
Each of the Trojan hockey teams will be on home ice Thursday evening as they take on Luverne. The girls game will begin at 5:30 p.m., with the boys matchup to follow.

The Worthington Trojans tallied a team total of 140.6 in their Tuesday night home gymnastics meet against Windom-Mountain Lake, which finished with 105.85.
Jada Milbrath won the all-around competition for WHS with a score of 35.45 points, with teammates Isabella Lazzu and Lucy Thier taking second and third, respectively.
On the vault, Marley Phomsartry and Olivia Bullerman each had scores of 9.1, and Lazzu was next at 9.05. Milbrath's 8.775 was tops on the bars, and Thier was second and Lazzu third.
Milbrath also was No. 1 on the beam with a score of 8.875, with Lazzu second and Trojan Brooklyn Dykstra third. Thier won the floor with a 9.15; Phomasatry was second and Milbrath third.

In girls basketball, it was visiting St. Peter over Worthington 84-34. In boys hoops, host St. Peter knocked off the Trojans 82-43.
