Trojan girls get another home golf win, this time over Windom Area

The Worthington Trojans' girls golfers won their Friday meet against the Eagles, finishing with a team total of 211 strokes compared to Windom Area's 221.


Claire Meyer's round of 49 was one shot behind the Eagles' Ali Lund, who came at 48. Also recording counting rounds for Worthington were Ashtyn Krohn, third overall at 52; Greta Mahlberg, fourth at 53; and Ellie Drost, sixth at 57. Trojans coach Brooke Hermsen said she was extremely proud of her team, which was playing at home on Meet the Trojans Day before a great following of fans.


In boys golf, Gerrit Larson of WHS shared medalist honors with Windom Area's Henry Visker, with each shooting a 39. The Eagles defeated the Trojans in team play, 165-176.


Also coming in with counting scores for Worthington were Blake Vosburgh and Tyson Petersen, who each had 45s and tied for seventh overall, and Cameron Krommendyk, who had a 47 and was ninth.


Both Trojan golf teams compete in Big South Championship meets this week. The girls play on Monday and the boys Tuesday; both events are at Dacotah Ridge Golf Club in Morton.

Jackson County Central's softball team improved its record to 17-1 on Saturday by going 3-0 in its Shelly Hotzler Invitational Tournament in Jackson.


The Huskies began their day with a 12-1, five-inning win over Albert Lea, and then blanked Chatfield 15-0 in three innings and topped Pipestone Area 10-2 to win the tourney title.


One of the teams competing in JCC's tournament Saturday was Worthington High School. The Trojans were beaten 9-0 by Kimball, 21-6 by New York Mills and 11-1 by Glencoe-Silver Lake and remain winless. They'll next play host to 4-11 Luverne at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Minnesota West softball field.

In baseball Saturday, Worthington played at Waseca and was shut out 3-0.

Ethan Anderson pitched well for the Trojans, allowing just one earned run in five innings while giving up four hits, walking none and striking out six. Easton Hostikka pitched a scoreless sixth and fanned two.


Wyatt Petersen, Dom Pavelko, Christian Dailey and Talen Turner each singled for WHS, now 2-12 and scheduled to play at 5:30 p.m. today at 5-10 Jackson County Central.

The WHS boys tennis team wrapped its regular season on Thursday with a 7-0 loss to St. James at the Worthington Middle School courts.


Each of the matches was decided in straight sets. The closest match of the day came at No. 1 doubles, at which Cristian Miranda and Coltin Olmanson were beaten by scores of 6-2, 6-4. 


Worthington begins play in the Section 2AA Tournament on Tuesday.
