It will be Gold Division champion Worthington taking on visiting Black Division champion Tri-City United when the two teams meet at 6 p.m. Thursday night at Trojan Field with the Big South Conference boys soccer title on the line.
The Trojans come in with a record of 10-4-1, while the Titans are 11-4. The teams met on Aug. 28 in Worthington's home opener of the season, which Tri-City United won by a score of 3-1. WHS allowed three first-half goals in that match, and the lone Trojan goal was scored by Eiby Martinez in the latter stages of the second half.
The Titans will enter Thursday night's match with momentum, as they earned a decisive 6-0 victory over Waseca on Tuesday night to advance to their showdown with the Trojans. The triumph gave Tri-City United a 5-1 Black Division record, which outpaced New Ulm's 4-1-1.
Worthington went 6-0 in Gold Division action this fall, with Marshall second at 4-2. The Trojans' last game came this past Saturday, as they lost 2-1 at non-conference foe Mankato East in a match coach Juan Flores called its worst of the season. Andy Guzman had the lone goal Saturday for Worthington.
Thursday's match is a precursor to the upcoming sectional tournament, which begins next Tuesday. The sectional semifinals are slated for next Thursday and the sectional final on Tuesday, Oct. 14 in New Prague. The Trojans also have a non-conference match set for this Saturday at Jordan.
