Trojan boys get second hockey win of the season; MW goes 1-3 in N.D.

Dominic Pavelko scored 5:05 into overtime Friday night as the Worthington Trojans' boys hockey team picked up their second win of the season, a 6-5 triumph at Redwood Valley.
Tayis Lien-Onsby and Noahh Hohenstein assisted on Pavelko's game-winner as the Trojans moved to 2-10 on the year. Worthington outshot the Cardinals 49-42 on the night, with goalkeeper Tyson Petersen making 37 saves.
Ryker Thier added a hat trick for WHS, which trailed by two goals on two different occasions in the game. Lien-Onsby and Hohenstein had the other Trojan goals. Others contributing assists against Redwood Valley were Pavelko (who had two), Hunter Heitkamp (who had two) and Trey Milbrath.
Coach Tyler Nienkerk offered praise to his team for never panicking or giving up during the game. WHS next hosts Fairmont on Tuesday night.

The Trojans' boys basketball team dropped games on both on Friday and Saturday nights to fall to 2-11 on the winter.
WHS got behind 14 in the first half, then trimmed the deficit all the way down to three on Caleb Meyer's 3-pointer right before the halftime buzzer. Visiting Luverne, though, moved ahead by 24 and held off a furious late Trojans rally to beat Worthington 79-67. Jaydon Johnson scored 24 points and Coy Thone 22 for Luverne, which moved to 6-4. Meyer paced Worthington offensively with 15 points while Trayson Meinders had 14, Kayson Spartz 13 and Isaiah Schroeder 11.
On Saturday, WHS scored the first 10 points of the third quarter to go up by eight, but host Madison, S.D. began the fourth with a 12-0 burst and beat the Trojans 63-58. Spartz had 18 to lead the way for Worthington.

In girls basketball Friday, Luverne jumped out to a 46-14 halftime advantage and went on to post a 74-28 triumph over the Trojans. Taya Johnson had a big night with 27 points to lead the Cardinals. Savannah Dale, Kaitlyn Mulder and Claire Schultz each had five points for WHS.

The Minnesota West Lady Jays went 1-1 over the weekend in a pair of games in Devils Lake, N.D.
Minnesota West, which is ranked third nationally in NJCAA Division 3, defeated Division 2 Dakota College of Bottineau 92-66 on Friday. Izzy Klumper led the Lady Jays in scoring with 21 points, Sadie Krahling had 20 points and Katrina Schutz added 17 points and nine rebounds. Katelyn Frodermann chipped in with a team-best 10 rebounds off the bench.
On Saturday, it was weekend host Lake Region State College, which competes at the Division 1 level, upending Minnesota West 84-62. Schutz had 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting to pace the Lady Jays offensively and Maddie Kamm added 11 points along with team highs of 10 rebounds and six assists. The loss dropped the Minnesota West women to 11-5.
In men's basketball, the Bluejays went 0-2 on the weekend to slip to 8-7 overall.
It was Dakota County of Bottineau topping Minnesota West 90-82 on Friday. Four Bluejay players scored in double figures, with D'Shaundis Moore leading the way with 16 points. Calvin Flood and Austin Florence each added 13 points, and Daniel Jones had 12.
On Saturday, it was Lake Region running past the Bluejays 107-85. Daniel Jones led the way scoring-wise with 13 points, Julian Pachecco and Kewone Jones each had 11 and Florence had 10.
Minnesota West opens its conference schedule with a home women-men's doubleheader against Minnesota State-Fergus Falls on Wednesday.
