Trojan boys capture track and field meet in Pipestone

The Worthington Trojans boys track and field team took first place Tuesday in the Bob Nangle Relay event in Pipestone. WHS compiled 164 total points, with Luverne coming in second at 120.


Tetlouch Gach established personal records while winning both the 110 and 300 hurdles. He took the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.52 seconds and the 300 hurdles with a clocking of 40.76. Gach also placed fourth individually in the triple jump.


Fanuel Wolday won the 3200 meters for WHS with a time of 10 minutes, 9.90 seconds. Caleb Meyer topped all high jump competitors with a leap of six feet, two inches, and Permeye Okony won the triple jump at 41-3 while also taking fourth in the 200. Additionally, the 4x100 relay came out on top in a time of 44.93. 


Other individuals who did well for Worthington were: Jacari Swinea, who placed second and PR'd in the 100 meters; Cameron Kinser, second with a PR in the 800 meters and fifth with a PR in the 400; Welbaka Morke, third in the long jump and fourth in the 100; Adess Aklog, third with a PR in the 800; Hudson Scheepstra, fourth in the 110 hurdles and fifth in the 300 hurdles; and Christian Kleve, fourth in the discus.


In the girls competition, the Trojans placed third among 11 teams with 79 points. Luverne dominated with 200 points; Hills-Beaver Creek was second at 82.5.


WHS had Lauryn Ahlers place first in the pole vault with a PR of 9-6. Kenadie Thiner was second in that event and also finished second with a PR in the 800. Grace Bates was second in the long jump and third with a PR in the triple jump, and Bella Lazzu was second with a PR in the high jump. Madison Sieve placed third in the 800.

Hannah McNab homered, tripled, singled and drove in three runs and Madi Polz homered, singled and had four RBIs Tuesday as the Worthington Trojans beat visiting Marshall via the 10-run rule, 10-0, in a five-inning high school softball game.


Bailey Ponto scattered five hits while walking none and striking out three in her five scoreless innings; she also got a pair of base hits at bat and scored three times. Victoria Bush added an RBI double and turned in a sparkling play at second base that resulted in the Tigers leaving the bases loaded in the third.


Worthington is now 5-4 on the season after beating Marshall for the second time this spring. The Tigers are 0-8.

The WHS girls golf team placed fourth at the Big South Conference event Tuesday in Marshall. The host Tigers had a team score of 184 and finished 23 strokes ahead of second-place St. Peter.


The Trojans, who finished at 212, were led by Claire Mahlberg, who shot a team-low 51 that had her in eighth place among individuals. Claire Meyer had a 52, Ava Schutz a 53 and Peyton Nickel a 56 for WHS. Also competing for Worthington were Ellie Drost, who had a 58, and Callie Rosenberg, who shot a 59.

In baseball, WHS slipped to 2-5 on the season after losing to Marshall 12-2. The Trojans will host St. Peter at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Catch the action on 104.3 La Voz.
