Top-ranked Lady Jays cruise to hoops win, but men lose

The No.1-in-the-nation Minnesota West Lady Jays improved to 5-0 in MCAC South Division play and 13-7 overall Wednesday night, cruising to a 76-47 victory over Ridgewater in Willmar.


The Lady Jays led 18-5 at the end of the first quarter and wound up outscoring Ridgewater in every period. Sadie Krahling had 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and 8-of-9 marksmanship from the foul line. Two other Minnesota West players contributed double-digit totals in points, as Rhea Tucker and Maddie Kamm each had 13 points. 


Kamm also chipped in with six rebounds, six assists and three steals. Katrina Schutz led all players with 10 rebounds while also blocking four shots. With the lopsided loss, the Warrior women dropped to 2-15 overall.


Ridgewater, though, did emerge with a triumph in the men's matchup, as it defeated the Bluejays 86-79. With the loss, Minnesota West slipped to 17-5 overall and 3-3 in MCAC South play. Ridgewater is now 11-7 and 3-3.


The Bluejays had a 43-36 advantage at the half Wednesday, but the Warriors got 49 points in the second half compared to just 36 for Minnesota West, which came into the game with a No. 13 national ranking.


Zachery Rigg had a game-best 29 points for the Bluejays and also led the way in rebounds with six. Henry Counsel had 11 points and Keion Irvin 10 for Minnesota West, which was outrebounded by Ridgewater 43-28.


The women and men both travel to Fergus Falls for a Saturday doubleheader against Minnesota State.

The Adrian Area high school wrestling team picked up a pair of victories in a triangular meet Tuesday night in northwest Iowa.


The Dragons earned a 57-12 win over Le Mars, winning four matches by fall and four others by technical fall. Getting pins were Riley Harberts at 107 pounds, Bryson Kunkel at 114, Moe Erdman at 127 and Jesse Bullerman at 172. Getting victories by technical fall were Izaiah Groenewold at 139, Charger Erlandson at 145, Jackson Jenniges at 152 and Caleb Wolf at 160. Travis Weiss contributed a win by major decision at 133 pounds, and Devin Mazza earned a win by decision at 285.


Adrian Area also defeated West Sioux, Hawarden 51-20. Pins for the Dragons were recorded by Harberts, Weiss, Cael Schettler at 145, Erlandson at 152, Bullerman at 189 and Mazza. A technical fall victory was earned by Jenniges at 160, and Roberto Hernandez won by major decision at 215.

In the Worthington Trojans' other wrestling match Tuesday night at the Minneota triangular, Dawson-Boyd-Lac Qui Parle-Montevideo United defeated WHS 58-13.


The Trojans picked up five of their points thanks to Dalton Larson's win by technical fall at 145 pounds. Major decision victories by Dominic Larson at 114 and Carlos Martinez at 215 completed Worthington's scoring.
