The Luverne and Windom American Legion baseball teams advanced to this week's Southwest SubState Tournament by placing first and second, respectively, in POD A play in the Southwest Sub-SubState tourney this past weekend at Windom's Island Park.
Windom got off to 0-1 start at Sub-SubState play by falling to Adrian 9-5 in opening-round action on Thursday. Adrian scored five runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead for good.
After that loss, Windom recorded a 7-0 forfeit victory over Edgerton, then avenged the Thursday defeat to Adrian by beating them 13-3. Windom then knocked off Russell-Tyler-Ruthton 9-2 to a clinch a SubState spot.
Luverne will open SubState play against Wabasso at 2 p.m. Thursday, while Windom — now 7-6 on the season — will play USC (Wells) at 5 p.m. Thursday. Other first-round games Thursday in the double-elimination tournament, which will be hosted in Truman, include St. James against Springfield at 11 a.m. and Sleepy Eye against Truman at 8 p.m.
In Southwest Sub-SubState POD B action, fifth-seeded Jackson won its first tourney game on Thursday as it scored one run in each of the first four innings and blanked Welcome/Sherburn 4-0 in Springfield. Jackson was then defeated by top-seeded Sleepy Eye 14-0 on Friday and then pounded 27-2 by Springfield on Saturday.
