Strong storm packing high winds causes damage in Sibley area

Severe thunderstorms on Wednesday afternoon caused significant damage around Sibley.

The storms passed through Osceola County with 70-mph wind, resulting in both extensive tree and structural damage around Sibley and Ashton. There was at least one semi that overturned, and more than 300 were reportedly without power as the wind downed power poles. No injuries were reported. Osceola County residents are being encouraged to visit Facebook and go to Osceola County Iowa Emergency Management to report damages.

While storms weakened as they moved through the Iowa Great Lakes, they quickly regained their strength as they moved into eastern Emmet and western Kossuth counties. Hail the size of ping pong balls was reported near Fenton, which is in Kossuth County.

Showers and thunderstorms remain possible through the next several days, and there's a chance that some could be severe.
