Sports Briefs for July 18, 2024

Worthington's American Legion baseball team is seeded eighth in the eight-team Substate Tournament that begins next Wednesday in New Ulm.


Post 5 will take on the No. 1-seeded Mankato American team at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Mueller Park. Other first-round games Wednesday include third-seeded Marshall against No. 6 Waseca at 3:30 p.m. at Mueller Park, the No. 2 seed Mankato National team facing No. 7 Northfield at 4:30 p.m. at Johnson Park and fourth-seeded New Prague against fifth-seeded New Ulm at 7 p.m. at Johnson Park.


The Mankato American vs. Worthington winner and New Prague vs. New Ulm victor would play each other Thursday. Teams defeated in the first-round matchups would fall into a loser's bracket, with games there also scheduled for Thursday.

There were five heats of stock car racing action and three heats of sport mods competition during Tuesday's Dirt Crown Series-Jim Larson Memorial event at Worthington Speedway.


Chad Ten Napel of Sioux City, Iowa, Johnny Spaw of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Kole Nordquist of Beresford, S.D., Gary Mattison of Lamberton and Jake McBirnie of Boone, Iowa won the stock car heats. Geoff Olson of Sioux City, Alec Fett of Burt, Iowa and Willy Kirk of Sloan, Iowa won the sport mod heats.


Racing resumes at 7 p.m. Saturday at the speedway.
