Spirit Lake-Okoboji falls at state tennis; Trojans lose on diamond

The Spirit Lake-Okoboji girls tennis team suffered its first loss of the season Monday, as they were defeated 5-4 by Clarinda in the quarterfinals of the Iowa State Class 1A Tournament.


The Indians had advanced to the quarterfinals after a 5-1 victory over Bishop Heelan. Spirit Lake-Okoboji won five of the six singles matches, making the doubles matches necessary. No. 1 Catherine Straus, No. 2 Taylor Schnieder, No. 4 Emma Straus, No. 5 Mikayla Mingus and No. 6 Izzie Wycoff each won their matches; all except Wycoff won in straight sets.


Clarinda advanced to 24-1 on the year with its win over the Indians. Spirit Lake-Okoboji ended its team season at 16-1.

The Worthington Trojans baseball team collected 14 hits on Monday but ended up falling 6-3 on the road to Albert Lea.


Mathias Noble had three hits for WHS while also scoring twice and Tucker Brandner added three hits of his own, including two doubles. Cooper McCoy also had a hot bat with a triple and two singles; he also scored a run and drove one in. Brandon Bosma connected for two singles and had an RBI as well.


Starting pitcher Max Ostrem pitched the first two innings for the Trojans, allowing four runs, and Noble pitched the last four innings and gave up two runs. WHS had three more hits in the game than the Tigers but hurt themselves by stranding 11 runners on base.

The Jackson County Central softball team is seeded No. 3 in the south half of the Section 3AA tournament and opens the postseason Tuesday against sixth-seeded Minneota/Canby.


The two teams square off at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in Luverne. The loser is done and the winner advances to play at 6 p.m. against either No. 2 Luverne or No. 7 Redwood Valley.


On the top half of the south side, No. 1 Pipestone, which as a record of 14-4, has a bye and No. 4 Windom opens against No. 5 Renville County West/BOLD. Windom and RCW/BOLD will play Tuesday in Pipestone, with the winner advancing to play the Arrows later in the evening.


In Section 2A softball, postseason action begins Tuesday with No. 3 Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey hosting GFW, No. 7 Martin County West hosting Madelia, No/ 9 Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove at Nicollet and No. 12 Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda at Springfield. All games start at 5 p.m.

The Worthington Cubs dropped an 11-9 decision Sunday at the Heron Lake Lakers. Following an 8-3, 10-inning home defeat Friday night to the Milroy Irish, the Cubs are now 2-2 on the season. The Cubs will next host Ruthton at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 28.


In other area amateur baseball action Sunday, the Jackson Bulls and Lakefield Horned Frogs each won a pair of games. Jackson topped Mountain Lake 9-5 and Fox Lake 9-8, and Lakefield defeated Mountain Lake 9-2 and Windom 4-3. Also Sunday, it was: Fairmont 3, Windom 1; Luverne 4, Milroy 1 and Hadley 7, Pipestone 1.
