Several Class A athletes do well at Tuesday's Trojan Relays

In Class A track and field competition Tuesday at the Trojan Relays in Worthington, several athletes turned in solid performances.


Among the boys, Southwest Minnesota Christian/Edgerton topped the team standings with 143 points, followed by Hills-Beaver Creek at 123 and Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda at 119. Adrian-Ellsworth placed sixth of seven teams with 53 points.


Leading the Coyotes was Evan Baumgarder, who took first place in both the 1600 meters and 3200 meters. Matthew Stapek finished first and set a personal record in the 800 meters, and Thaddeus Brey was a winner in the discus.  Other leaders included: Mason Kirchner, second in the pole vault; Caleb Appel, third with a PR in the 800 and sixth with a PR in the 100; and Tyson Clausen, fourth with a PR in the discus. Stapek also came in sixth with a PR in the 400.


For the Dragons, Carter Murphy was second with PR in the 100 and also second in the 200. Darwin Demarrias-Jansma was second in the 1600. Caelan Bertrand was eighth with a PR in the 800 and sixth in the triple jump. Josh Honken was fourth in the shot put and seventh in the discus; Cheick Zeba was fifth in the shot put and sixth in the discus.


Among the girls, Southwest Minnesota Christian/Edgerton was also first with 170 points. Westbrook-Walnut Grove/Red Rock Central was well back in second at 107.33. Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda was fifth at 86.22 points, and Adrian-Ellsworth sixth at 72.


For the Coyotes, Alabama Hoonhorst posted an individual victory in the discus and was also fourth in the shot put. Brynlee Farris was second with a PR in the 300 hurdles and third with a PR in the triple jump. Mara Clarke came in second with a PR in the 1600, Rebecca Cheadle was third in the high jump, Laiken Farris was fifth with a PR in the 200 and Giselle Meza was eighth with a PR in the 800.   


For the Dragons, Lucy Thier was triumphant in the 400 and took second with a PR in the triple jump. Katelyn Frodermann was second in the high jump, and Allie Cook third with a PR in the 200. Other PRs Tuesday for A-E were set by Kaitlyn Taylor, who was sixth in the shot put, and Marley Phomsatry, who was sixth in the triple jump. Phomsatry also tied for fifth in the high jump.

The Worthington Cubs improved to 2-0 in the 2025 amateur baseball season by picking up a 2-1 Mother's Day triumph over Fox Lake at the Worthington Middle School field.


Cubs pitchers combined to strike out a total of 22 Fox Lakes hitters in the game. Starting hurler Tucker Brandner fanned 13 batters in his six innings of work, while all nine of the outs gotten by reliever Blake Ahrenstorff came on whiffs.


At the plate, Daniel Castro had a pair of hits, Logan Huisman and Ahrenstorff each picked up RBI doubles and four others players had one hit each. The Cubs got their runs in the second and third innings; Fox Lake got one in the eighth. 


Worthington had a home game scheduled for Wednesday night against the Windom Pirates. They'll also be back at Worthington Middle School field on Friday evening when they meet the Milroy Yankees at 8 p.m., following the Worthington Trojans' baseball game against Jordan.


Other home games include: May 25 against Luverne; May 28 against Pipestone; June 8 against Hadley; June 25 against Fairmont; June 26 against Jackson; and July 9 against the Milroy Irish.
