Post 5 drops opening game at Sub-State Legion tournament

Second-seeded Marshall pulled away from Worthington on Wednesday by scoring four key runs in the fifth inning to break the game open and went on to beat Post 5 8-2 in first-round action at the Division I Sub-State 2 Legion Baseball Tournament at Mueller Park in New Ulm.

Worthington remains alive in the double-elimination tourney, as it will play Northfield at 11:30 a.m. today at Mueller Park.

Despite grabbing a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning and adding a run in the third, Marshall’s bats were kept in check by Worthington starting pitcher Chase Byrne for much of his 5 2/3 innings of work. Then came a two-out rally in the sixth, though.

Wilson Mahlberg went 2-for-3 to pace the Worthington offense, and Dominic

Pavelko was 2-for-4. Post 5 scored both of its runs in the fifth inning thanks to a Marshall error.
