Ruby Begonia flew to victory Saturday to complete the win in the 2024 Great Gobbler Gallop in Cuero, Texas. Paycheck just ... flew.
The annual competition between Worthington's and Cuero's finest racing turkeys had its initial leg in September when Cuero's Ruby won by 30 seconds after Paycheck got off to a delayed start. On Saturday, Ruby Begonia cruised to victory in a time of 42.78 seconds. Paycheck, on the other hand, finished with a time of 2 minutes, 10.2 seconds after incurring two out of bounds penalties and three touch penalties; the Worthington bird couldn't resist heading into the crowd along Esplanade Avenue and into what would be considered "fowl territory."
To Cuero this year goes recognition as "Turkey Capital of the World” and the “Traveling Turkey Trophy of Tumultuous Triumph.” Worthington earns the "Circulating Consolation Cup of Consummate Commiseration.” The communities have been racing turkeys — and cementing their bonds of friendship — since 1972.
