No. 3 Lady Jays knock off No. 1 Anoka-Ramsey in women's hoops

The third-ranked Minnesota West Lady Jays women's basketball team knocked off top-rated Anoka-Ramsey on the Golden Rams' court Saturday, overcoming an early 12-point deficit to win 62-59.

The Lady Jays trailed 27-15 in the second quarter before rallying to get within 32-28 by halftime. They took a 42-41 edge into the fourth quarter and then got some clutch foul shooting down the stretch.

Trailing 59-58, Katrina Schutz sank a pair of free throws with 25 seconds remaining to put Minnesota West up by one. Then, following a missed Anoka-Ramsey layup, Maddie Kamm made two free throws of her own with 14 seconds for a three-point Minnesota West lead. The Golden Rams missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer in the final seconds.

The Lady Jays finished the day shooting 23-of-28 from the foul line compared to 6-of-10 for Anoka-Ramsey. Kamm led the way with 20 points, eight rebounds and six assists as Minnesota West improved to 13-5 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Sadie Krahling added 16 points, and Schutz chipped in with 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Lady Jays were also boosted by a defense that limited the Golden Rams to just 32% shooting from the floor.

In the men's game, the Bluejays managed just 15 points in the first half and trailed by 19 at the break before ultimately losing to Anoka-Ramsey 75-58.

Da'Shaundis Moore had team highs of 22 points and seven rebounds for Minnesota West, now 9-8 and 1-1 this season. Keion Irvin added 18 points. The men, as well as the women, play at Riverland on Wednesday.
