New Ulm squeaks past WHS 1-0 in boys soccer showdown

Visiting New Ulm remained undefeated in the current boys soccer season by eking out a 1-0 triumph over Worthington on Tuesday night at Trojan Field.
The Eagles, now 10-0 this fall, showcased a more physical style of play in the first half, but it was the Trojans who created the best chances. Nevertheless, the teams fought to a scoreless draw through the first 40 minutes.
In the second half, the Trojans and New Ulm continued to be sparked by strong defensive efforts. With 17:12 remaining, however, John Hoffman scored off of teammate Joshua Shaneman's corner kick to make it 1-0. WHS had a couple of good chances late, but their shots were off target.
The Trojans are now 7-3 on the season. Next up is another big test, as WHS will travel to Marshall for a Thursday match. It will then play a Saturday afternoon match at Willmar.

The Worthington High girls soccer team was at New Ulm and remains in search of its first win, as the Eagles topped the Trojans 4-1.
The WHS goal was scored by co-captain Giselle Martinez, her first of the season. The Trojans next host Marshall at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The Worthington Trojans girls volleyball team evened their record at 3-3 on Tuesday night and improved to 3-1 in Big South Conference action by sweeping visiting Waseca 3-0. Game scores were 25-18, 25-20, 25-23.
Alaina Feit had nine kills, while Kaitlyn Mulder and Natalia Martinez added six kills each and Lauren Nixon and Mara Thier five each. Thier also had 11 digs, four blocks and went 13-for-14 serving.
Kamryn Olson contributed 20 digs for WHS and was 15-of-15 serving. Feit was 11-for-11 serving, and Natya Khamphanh passed for 31 set assists and added six blocks.
The Trojans will play at Luverne on Thursday night.

In girls tennis on Monday, the Trojans were defeated by Redwood Valley 4-3.
Worthington captured a pair of singles matches as well as a doubles match.
Emma Hietbrink won in straight sets at No. 3 singles, 6-3 6-2, and Madison Poe did the same at No. 4 singles, by scores of 6-2- 6-0. At No. 3 doubles, the Trojan duo of Claire Schultz and Isabella Poe picked up a 6-3 6-2 triumph.
Three of Redwood Valley's four wins came in straight sets. The exception was at No. 2 singles, where Worthington's Kah Blu Moo was defeated 2-6 6-2 6-3.
