MW loses pair of Wednesday hoops games; Trojan boys hockey falls 7-3

Minnesota West's women's and men's basketball teams were each defeated by Division I North Dakota State College of Science in Wednesday games in the New Years Classic at the Center for Health and Wellness.
In the women's matchup, NDSCS outscored the Lady Jays 27-14 in the third quarter on its way to a 74-65 win. Minnesota West shot just 33% from the floor in the game and was outrebounded 54-39.
For the Lady Jays, Katrina Schutz led the way with 19 points and nine rebounds. Sadie Krahling contributed 13 points, and Maddie Kamm 12. Minnesota West is 10-4 overall and ranked third in the latest NJCAA Division 3 women's hoops poll.
In the men's game, the Bluejays trailed by just two at the half but wound up losing to NDSCS 82-70. Kewome Jones topped Minnesota West with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Three of Jones' teammates also scored in double figures — Austin Florence had 15 points, and Calvin Flood and De'Shaundis Moore added 12 apiece.
The Bluejays are now 8-5 overall on the season. Both they and the Lady Jays play at the Lake Region State College tournament in Devils Lake, N.D. this weekend. They'll each face Dakota College at Bottineau Friday and Lake Region State College on Saturday.

The Worthington Trojans boys hockey team lost its third game in three days on Wednesday, losing on the road to Windom Area 7-3.
The Trojans got on the board first when Dominic Pavelko scored 4:54 into the first period. The Eagles, however, even things up with less than two minutes left in the first, then got a pair of goals in the second to lead 3-1 heading into the final period.
Windom Area made it a 4-1 game before Pavelko scored once again for a 4-2 score at 5:42 of the third. The Eagles would go ahead it 6-2 before the Trojans got their final goal, which was scored by Kaden Khamphanh on a power play and assisted by Hunter Heitkamp.
Worthington is now 1-10 on the season. The Trojans will play at Redwood Valley on Friday night.
