Brock Murphy, the reigning club champion at Willow Run Golf Course in Sioux Falls, emerged from a crowded chase in the final holes to win a weather-altered Labor Day Classic tournament by two shots Monday at GreatLIFE Worthington.

With either one or two holes remaining for the Championship Flight field of 16 — a change from that usual "Final Four" made due to rains that washed  out play Sunday morning for the remainder of that day — two golfers were tied for the top spot and four were each one shot off the pace. Murphy was able to birdie the 17th hole and then parred the 18th to finish his victorious round of even=par 71. Four golfers — Josh Eykyn, Ben Strauman, Max Tylke and Will Mulder — all tied for second with rounds of 73, and Brett Benson was next at 74.

Golfers resumed Round of 32 play in the Championship Flight on Monday morning, then began a 16-player Championship Flight with the first foursome of golfers starting on Hole 1, followed consecutively by three more foursomes. Holes 17 and 18 were played twice, as 5 and 6 were too wet from Sunday.

The Worthington Trojans kept their season-opening football game against Fairmont close for most of the first half, but the visiting Cardinals ultimately pulled away to win 34-0.

WHS got Fairmont to turn the ball over on downs on two consecutive possessions and also picked off a pair of Cardinal passes in the first half. Fairmont, however, scored two touchdowns in the final three minutes of the first half for a 28-0 lead.

The Cardinals limited the Trojans to 65 yards in total offense, with starting WHS QB Isaiah Schreoder leaving the game in the second quarter due to injury. Defensively, Wilson Mahlberg, Hudson Scheepstra, Kason Spartz and Logan Kerkaert all had five total tackles. Scheepstra and Kerkaert each had interceptions, Spartz forced a fumble and Austin Gruis recovered fumble.

The Trojans play at St. Peter this Friday.
