Minnesota West women, men split Sunday basketball doubleheader

The No. 1-ranked Minnesota West Lady Jays kept on winning Sunday afternoon, and they once again earned a lopsided victory as they topped St. Cloud Tech 89-52.


Minnesota West, now 14-5 overall and 4-0 in conference play, led 43-29 at the half and then outscored their guests 27-9 to break things wide open. The Lady Jays once again had balanced scoring as Sadie Krahling scored 17 points, Katrina Schutz and Payton Riemers each had 15, Maddie Kamm and Jayda Hellewell 10 apiece, Izzy Klumper nine and Katelyn Frodermann eight. Kamm led the Lady Jays in rebounds with eight, and Schutz had a team-best six assists.


Minnesota West limited St. Cloud Tech to 30% shooting and forced 22 turnovers while committing just 10. The Lady Jays also dominated on the boards, 50-35.


In the men's game, the Bluejays had  47-35 advantage at halftime but then surrendered 58 points after that to drop a 93-90 decision to the Huskies.


Daniel Jones scored 17 points for Minnesota West, Kewone Jones had 16, Da'Shaundis Moore added 15, and Keion Irvin and Owen Bielke contributed 13 and 11 points, respectively. The Bluejays turned the ball over 21 times compared to just nine times for St. Cloud Tech. Minnesota West has now lost seven of its last eight; it's now 9-10 overall and 1-3 in conference action.

Several Worthington Trojan wrestlers placed Saturday and the team finished sixth in points at the Wabasso Individual Tournament.


Sam Dagel finished first at 114 pounds for WHS, and Dominic Larson came in as a runner-up as 107 pounds. Other placers for the Trojans included: Nahom Legesse, third at 127; Kian Ling, third at 145; Jace Riemersma-Feit, fourth at 121; Miguel Moreno, fourth at 139; Dyson Neugebauer, fifth at 107; Christopher Santiago, fifth at 133; Austin Gruis. fifth at 189; and Bly Scott, sixth at 114.

The Trojans' gymnastics team scored a new season high in points Saturday at the Jackson County Central Sweetheart Invitational while placing second in the seven-team event. New Prague won with 142.175 points, and Worthington had 141.925. JCC was fifth at 133.175.


Lucy Thier was the top competitor in floor exercise for the Trojans with a score of 9.375, and teammate Isabella Lazzu and Brooklyn Dykstra were right behind her in second and third at 9.325 and 9.3, respectively.


Other top-five finishers for WHS on Saturday were: Jada Milbrath, second on the bars at 8.875; Thier, third on the bars at 8.7; and Marley Phomsatry, fifth on the vault at 9.15. Thier was fourth in the all-around at 35.925 and Milbrath fifth at 35.775.

Alexander Trierweller had five points — including a hat trick — and Nolan Trierweller and James Rieland each had two goals as Prairie Center skated past host Worthington 11-0 in boys hockey.


Prairie Center led by only 1-0 after the first period, but then broke things open by scoring six times in the second. WHS is now 2-15; it will host 3-12 Redwood Valley on Tuesday night.
