MCC/Fulda boys cross country wins home meet in Slayton

Murray County Central/Fulda won the boys race with 39 points and Springfield the girls race with 61 on Tuesday at the Warrior Invitational cross country meet in Slayton.
In the boys race, Aiden Appel was the top placer for MCC/Fulda, as he came in second with a time of 17:49 — three seconds behind the winner, Cooper Evans of Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey. Austin Kinser of Worthington was fourth, MCC/Fulda's Alexander Betz and Matthew Stapek placed fifth and sixth, respectively, and Adrian-Ellsworth's Darwin Demarrias-Jansma was seventh.
Beckett Stelter was 12th for MCC/Fulda and Micah Janssen was 16th. Among the other competitors for the Trojans were: Braddock Marquardt, 13th; Ryan Phelps, 18th; Jose Chavez Vega, 19th, Andrew Olague, 21st; and Evan Meyer, 23rd. Worthington was third overall in the team standings.
Jackson County Central's top runners were Kayden Mitchell (14th), David Botello-Ramos (19th) and Gavin Tusa (24th). Others running for the Dragons included Aiden Lichter (28th) and Cody Weidert (29th).
Among the girls, MCC/Fulda's Laiken Farris was second at 20:42, just two seconds behind victor Katie Johnson of Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey. Among those in the top 10 were Naiya Ayers of Jackson County Central, fourth; Madison Sieve of Worthington, sixth; and Mara Clarke of MCC/Fulda, eighth.
Adrian-Ellsworth's Olivia Bullerman placed 11th, and teammates Lucy Thier and Jozie Cuperus were 16th and 18th. Holland Vogel of MCC/Fulda was 17th, Heron Lake-Okabena's Eryn Salentiny was 19th. JCC's Zadi Farmer was 20th and fellow Huskie Abigail Mohr was 23rd. Worthington's Emily Dahlquist was 24th.

The Worthington Trojans' boys soccer team played a solid game defensively and created multiple scoring opportunities on their way to an 8-0 road triumph over St. James/Windom/Madelia — collectively known as Wings United,'
Coach Juan Flores noted that a lot of his players got minutes in the match. Leading the offensive attack for WHS was Samuel Togba, who had three goals. Saul Galvez, Diego Alvarado, Alan Tovar, Alfredo Martinez and Danny Banegas contributed one apiece.
The Trojans, now 9-3-1, play at home Thursday against Fairmont.

The Worthington girls soccer team competed at Trojan Field against Wings United and played its first match of the season in which it didn't lose. The Trojans finished in a 0-0 tie.

The No.1-ranked Marshall girls volleyball team blanked visiting Worthington 3-0 by game scores of 25-19, 25-8, 25-10.
Kills leaders for WHS were Lauren Nixon with five and Natalia Martinez with four. Martinez and Mara Thier each had six digs. Suzanna Shwe contributed a pair of ace serves and Ava Schutz had one. Natya Khamphanh had one solo block and two block assists while passing for 11 set assists.
The 6-6 Trojans host Windom on Thursday.

In girls tennis on Monday, visiting Worthington lost to Waseca 5-2.
One of the Trojans' victories came from No. 4 singles player Madison Poe, who earned a 6-2 6-0 triumph. The other came from the No. 3 doubles tandem of Isabella Poe and Claire Schultz, who won 6-1 6-1. All of Waseca's victories came in straight sets.

In college volleyball, the Minnesota West Lady Jays' 13-match winning streak came to an end Monday night with a 3-1 loss to the Morningside junior varsity at Western Iowa Technical Community College in Sioux City. Earlier in the day, the Lady Jays got past Western Iowa Tech 3-2.
Minnesota West, now 19-2, will be at home tonight to host Anoka-Ramsey at 6:30 p.m. You can catch the action on 104.3 La Voz.
