Marshall rolls to boys hoops win over WHS; Trojan girls hockey gets a W

The Marshall Tigers set the tone immediately on their way to posting a 79-46 victory over host Worthington in a Thursday night boys basketball game. 


Marshall scored the first eight points of the contest and forced WHS into a timeout with a little more than two minutes gone by. The Tigers, who are now 3-0, had a 47-24 advantage at the half.


Sophomore Oliver Voigt had 20 points to lead Marshall. For the Trojans, now 1-2, junior Isaiah Schoeder had 12 points and freshman Kason Spartz was next with nine.

The Trojans' girls hockey  team recovered from a slow start Thursday and defeated South Central (Waseca and Faribault) on the road, 9-2.


WHS trailed 1-0 after the first period, but came alive by scoring five times in the second before adding four more in the third. Madelyn Cummings had a pair of goals on the night for the Trojans. Scoring one goal each were Madilyn Polz, Aliana Bristow, Victoria Bush, Breeta Johnson, Audrey Johnson, Giselle DeLeon and Kaylyn Urdahl. Assists leaders were Kiley Platt and Cummings with three each.


The Trojans outshot South Central 39-23 in the game. Macie Mahlberg had 21 saves for WHS, which is now 4-6.

In boys hockey, Worthington played host to Waseca and was beaten 15-0. The Trojans are now 0-5.

The Worthington Trojans wrestling team went 1-1 on the road at a Thursday night triangular meet, losing to Fulda/Murray County Central 39-29 and defeating Red Rock Central 49-18.


Against RRC, Jace Riemersma won by fall at 127 pounds for Worthington, as did Austin Gruis at 189. Kian Ling was a victor by major decision at 139 pounds, and Dominic Larson won by decision at 107. The Trojans also picked up an additional 30 points via five forfeits,


Individual results from the match against Fulda/MCC were not immediately available. Worthington wrestlers will compete this weekend in a tournament at Jackson County Central.
