A man died early Friday morning following a standoff with law enforcement in Cottonwood County.
According to a press release, county dispatch received a report at approximately 5:10 p.m. Thursday of a domestic situation involving a firearm at a rural Westbrook address. Cottonwood County deputies, along with other agencies, responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, it was learned the victim was able to get out of the residence, and the suspect was alone in the house. Deputies set up a perimeter and requested the regional High Risk Entry and Arrest (HEAT) Team assist at the scene. Attempts to contact the suspect were unsuccessful.
The HEAT Team arrived on scene and attempted to negotiate with the suspect, but the suspect would not respond to the negotiator. Attempts to contact the suspect throughout the night continued. At approximately 2:44 a.m. Friday, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect was transported to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The case remains under investigation. In addition to the HEAT Team, the Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Windom Police Department, Westbrook Police Department, Westbrook Ambulance,
Minnesota State Patrol, Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
