Mahlberg qualifies for state girls golf tourney

Lilly Mahlberg qualified for the state tournament and the Worthington Trojans girls golf team finished in a tie for third place Wednesday in the Section 3AA Tournament at Oakdale Golf Club.


The Trojans had a season-best team score of 356 on Wednesday and finished with a two-round total of 726, which was good enough to tie Fairmont for third. Redwood Valley completed sectional tourney play with a team score of 679, and Minnewaska Area was second at 709.


Mahlberg, meanwhile, shot a round of 86 Wednesday after recording a score of 85 last week. Her two-round total of 171 placed her seventh among individuals and qualified for her state, which is set for June 13-14 at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan.


Also competing for the Trojans at sectionals were: Madison Beckmann, who had a two-round total of 180; Mia Nixon, who finished at 183; Tarren Spartz, 192; Claire Mahlberg, 201; and Ellie Weg, 228.

In boys golf on Wednesday, Worthington’s Logan Powers competed in day two of the Section 3AA Tournament at Oakdale Golf Club and carded a round of 76, missing qualifying for state by eight shots.


Powers’ two-round total of 160 put him in a tie for 14th among individuals. His round Wednesday included four birdies, and Powers had a one-under-par 35 over the first nine holes.

in the Section 2AAA baseball tournament Wednesday, top-seeded New Prague blanked eighth-seeded Worthington 12-0 in a five-inning opening round game in New Prague. WHS, which got singles from Mason Schutz, Mathias Noble and Cade Grimmius, will play an elimination game at 2 p.m. Saturday in New Ulm.
