The Fairmont Cardinals advanced in the Section 3AA elimination bracket Monday night with a 4-3 triumph over Luverne at Legion Field in Marshall.
Luverne grabbed the early edge by scoring three runs in the first inning, but Fairmont relief pitcher Jensen Livesay shut things down the rest of the way. He allowed no runs on four hits over the final 6 2/3 innings while striking out seven and walking four.
With the game knotted at three-apiece in the seventh, Fairmont's Luke Haefner hit a sacrifice fly to score Josh Soelter. It was Soelter’s third run scored in the contest; he also led the team with a pair of hits.
Fairmont had been scheduled to face Minnewaska Area in another elimination bracket game Tuesday. That matchup was postponed due to rain and now will be played at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Also Monday night in Marshall, Windom Area – competing in a championship bracket semifinal against Montevideo – was edged 2-1.
Montevideo went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first, but the Eagles tied it in the fifth when Stevie Meyer was hit by a pitch, advanced on a Hunter Palm groundout and scored on a Matthew Voehl single. Montevideo, though, scored the winning run in the sixth on a sac fly on which Voehl made the catch and tumbled into the Montevideo dugout.
Windom Area was scheduled to play Tuesday night against the Fairmont/Minnewaska Area victor. That game will now be played at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
