The Minnesota West Lady Jays set a team record for points in a game Saturday as they overwhelmed Riverland 128-26 in a women's basketball game at the Center for Health & Wellness.
The Lady Jays are the No. 1 ranked team in NJCAA Division 3, and Riverland is winless through 17 games. Minnesota West put up multiple impressive numbers, with perhaps the most notable being that each of the nine players on its roster finished with double-digit point totals. Jayda Hellewell led the way with 17 points, Sadie Krahling and Katrina Schutz added 16 each, Izzy Klumper and Ayla Texley 15 apiece, Payton Reimers and Katelyn Frodermann 14 each, Maddie Kamm 11 and Anistasia Smith 10.
The Lady Jays, up 32-11 after the first quarter, outscored Riverland 33-2 in the second, and followed that up with a 35-3 advantage in the third. Minnesota West set another team mark by passing for 37 assists. Reimers had six of them, Kamm five, and five other players had four apiece.
The Lady Jays made 66% of their shots from the floor, while Riverland sank just 20% of theirs while turning the ball over 33 times. Minnesota West is now 19-5 overall and 8-0 in the MCAC South.
In the men's game, Riverland — ranked No. 2 nationally -- led 42-32 at intermission and began the second half with a 15-2 spurt on their way to a 92-68 win over the Bluejays, who dropped to 11-12 overall and 3-5 in the MCAC South.
The Blue Devils made 53% of their shots compared to the Bluejays' 39 percent. Keion Irvin paced Minnesota West with 14 points, Owen Bielke contributed 13 and Da'Shaundis Moore and Kewone Jones each had 10.
The Bluejay men will be back in action Monday night as they'll host Rochester at 6:30 p.m.
