JCC marches on to state Class AA football tourney

Jackson County Central captured its third straight Section 3AA football championship Friday night, pounding Pipestone Area 48-7 in the sectional title game at Trojan Field in Worthington.


Roman Voss ran for 113 yards and two touchdowns and also added a TD pass for the Huskies, who are now 10-0 this season. JCC led 18-0 at halftime and then exploded for 30 points in the first four minutes of the third quarter. That began with an 85-yard TD return on the opening kickoff by Ben Dahlin.


The Huskies will be the No. 2 seed in the state AA tournament and will take on No. 3 Norwood-Young America, which is 11-0, at 7 p.m. Friday at Orono High School.


Also in playoff football Friday, it was unbeaten Hills-Beaver Creek advancing to state in 9-Man by topping Mountain Lake Area 37-6. Springfield earned a berth in state Class A by downing Murray County Central 20-10. Fairmont moved on in Class 3A by edging Waseca 17-12, and Marshall moved on by defeating Hutchinson 35-13.

In the Minnesota Class A boys cross country meet on Saturday, Luverne placed second as a team with 91 points, five points behind Redwood Valley. Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey was 15th.


Individuals placing among the top 100 were: Evan Baumgardner, Murray County Central/Fulda, 22nd; Owen Janiszeski, Luverne, 24th; Bryce Green, Windom Area, 27th; Sage Viessman, Leif Ingebretson and Dylan Ommen of Luverne, 34th through 36th; Marcus Papik, Luverne, 40th; Ethan Schroeder, Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey, 46th; Cooper Evers, MLA/C, 50th; Jonah Uilk, Southwest Minnesota Christian/Edgerton, 82nd; Matthew Stapek, MCC/F, 96th; Joseph Torres, MLA/C, 100th.


In the state Class A girls meet, Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey placed 16th. Area individuals placing in the top 100 were: Katie Johnson, MLA/C, 16th; Summer Mollberg, Luverne, 33rd; Mara Clarke, MCC/F, 45th; Naiya Ayers, Jackson County Central, 51st; and Cora Pauling, JCC, 80th.


In the Class AA boys meet, Marshall captured a state championship with a score of 73. Perham was second at 81. For the Tigers, Samuel Deutz was ninth, Landon Marthaler 17th, Josh Liebfried 20th, Keagen Anderson 28th and Kohen Holcomb 29th. Senior Fanuel Wolday competed for Worthington High School and was 45th. 


In the Class AA girls meet, Marshall placed eighth as a team. Macy Hanson of Fairmont took third among individuals.


In the Iowa Class AA boys cross country meet on Saturday, Spirit Lake took ninth as a team and Okoboji was 12th. Dietrich Dirks was 10th individually for the Indians, and Evan Osler 17th for the Pioneers. Malakai Vermeer and Michael Wassenaar competed for Sheldon and were 34th and 56th, respectively.


In the Iowa Class A boys country meet, Sibley-Ocheyedan's Ben Byers placed seventh and teammate Cale Reiter was 52nd.  Among Class A girls, the Generals' Amadelaid Benitez placed 49th.
