January weather has warmer highs, colder lows, less moisture

The first month of Worthington weather in 2022 included high temperatures slightly warmer than normal, low temperatures much colder than normal and total precipitation a little less than the average, according to data compiled at the Worthington Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The normal average temperature in Worthington in January is 22.6 degrees and the average low is 5.3 degrees, according to National Weather Service statistics. This year, those corresponding numbers are 23.8 degrees and minus-1.9, degrees respectively, meaning January highs were 1.2 degrees warmer than average and the month’s lows 6.7 degrees colder than normal.

January’s highest temperature in Worthington was 46 degrees, which was reported on the 12th. There was also a high of 45 degrees reported on the 13th, and a high of 44 degrees on the 4th.

The coldest reading of the month in Worthington was recorded on Jan. 26 at minus-15 degrees. Lows of minus-14 were also recorded on Jan. 7, 21 and 25, and there were lows of minus-13 on Jan. 2 and 20.


In terms of precipitation, Worthington had a measured total of .57 inches of moisture during the month of January. Comparatively, National Weather Service statistics indicate that the average rainfall for the month of January is .71 inches. Meanwhile, a total of 10.1 inches of snow fell in the previous month; that’s three-tenths of an inch above the average. Seven inches of that snowfall total, as well as .27 of the month’s precipitation, was recorded on Jan. 15.
