In Class 1A Substate 1 playoff baseball action Tuesday night, host Akron-Westfield jumped out to a 6-0 advantage after two innings and held on to defeat Harris-Lake Park by a score of 7-4. Akron-Westfield’s record improved to 25-3 with the victory, while the Wolves’ season came to end with a mark of 11-12.
In another Class 1A Substate 1 matchup, George-Little Rock’s season came to a conclusion following a 10-0 loss to Alta-Aurelia, which now has a record of 21-7. The Mustangs finished their 2024 season at 5-13.
Meanwhile, in Class 2A Substate 1 play, Spirit Lake improved to 14-9 on the year by defeating Emmetsburg 10-2. The Indians trailed 2-0 after the top of the first inning but got two in the bottom of the first and later put up a six-spot in the fourth in posting the win. Spirit Lake will next take on Estherville Lincoln Central, which is now 19-5 after a narrow 1-0 triumph over Okoboji, at 7 p.m. Saturday. The Pioneers end their summer with a 10-15 record.
Also in Class 2A Substate 1, West Lyon improved to 18-3 on the year, but it wasn’t easy. Central Lyon, which entered Tuesday night’s contest with 10-17 record, was knotted with the Wildcats 3-3 after seven innings. The Lions scored one in the top of the eighth to grab the edge, but West Lyon tallied two in the bottom of the eighth to post a 5-4 win. West Lyon will now meet 23-11 Unity Christian on Saturday.
