Following the 2023 Sibley-Ocheyedan Homecoming Parade, a decision was made to change the location of the 2024 parade to around the school property. As there has been recent pushback on that decision, the school is now giving students, staff and community members a chance to share their voice.
The downtown route has been used by the school for many years, a news release said. That route allows students, parents and the community to all gather at a central location that is convenient. A drawback to this location, the school states, is the transportation, safety and management of students.
A school route would be new and different and could be conceived as a more convenient and safer location for students and staff. A drawback would be the change in tradition, loss of foot traffic downtown and potential negative impact to downtown businesses. Other than a change in location, an effort would be made try to keep all other aspects of the parade the same.
