Fulda to host benefit golf tourney for Worthington family on Saturday

The Woodduck Wacker, a four-person best ball golf tournament that is serving as a benefit for Matt, Dani and Maci Jo Thier of Worthington, will take place Saturday afternoon at Town & Country Golf Course in Fulda.

Registration for the tourney will begin at 12:30 p.m., with a shotgun start scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

Ali Beckmann, one of the event’s organizers, said Thursday the golf tournament was started a couple of years ago after the closure of Brian’s Supper Club in Fulda. Proceeds from the tournament last year were donated toward a local scholarship fund, and this year will go to the Thier family.

Maci Jo Thier was born on July 12, two days after a monitor recorded a fetal heartbeat of 240 to 250 beats per minute. That’s double what's considered typical for a baby in utero. A heartbeat of 80 beats per minute was detected on July 12, and Maci Jo was delivered via an emergency C-section minutes later.

As medical bills continue to climb — Maci Jo has been hospitalized in Iowa City, Iowa — many have already reached out to help. A GoFundMe page has been started for the Thiers, and a T-shirt fundraiser is being coordinated. Now, on Saturday, the best ball golf tourney will lend a hand.

The per-person cost to participate in the tourney is $30, which includes greens fees, food and drink. For more information, contact Ali Beckmann at (651) 757-6383 or Jim Vanderbeek at (507) 425-3328.
