Four teams grab 1-0 edges in area baseball playoffs

Four amateur baseball playoff series got underway Wednesday night across southwest Minnesota.

In Worthington, the Cubs -- seeded fourth among Gopher League teams -- hosted Heron Lake, the fifth seed from the First Nite League. It was the Lakers emerging with a 5-3 victory in 11 innings. Heron Lake will try to wrap up the best-of-three series at home at 5 p.m. Saturday. A third game will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Worthington, if needed.

Also Wednesday, Jackson defeated visiting Pipestone 4-1, host Lakefield toppled Ruthton 12-2 in seven innings and Hadley won in Truman by blanking Fox Lake 3-0.

Jackson, No. 3 in the First Nite League, will look to close out Gopher League No. 6 Pipestone at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Pipestone. A game three would be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Jackson.

No. 4 First Nite seed Lakefield will travel to No. 5 Gopher seed Ruthton for a 7:30 p.m. game tonight. Game 3 will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Lakefield, if necessary.

Hadley, the Gopher League's third seed, will entertain Fox Lake at 2 p.m. Saturday. Game 3, if required, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Hadley.

New Ulm Legion Gold topped Worthington 7-1 Wednesday night in the Division 1 Sub-State 2 American Legion Baseball Tournament at Johnson Park. Worthington, though, rebounded Thursday morning and topped Jordan 14-6, and was scheduled to play again Thursday night against Waseca.
