Four Huskies -- and one each for Adrian Area and Fulda-MCC -- place at state wrestling tourney

Jackson County Central wound up with a pair of second-place finishers Saturday at the state Class A individual wrestling championships.


Isaac Rodriguez, competing at 139 pounds, and Dallas Gossen, competing at 152, both were defeated by technical fall in their championship matches on Saturday.

Rodriguez wasn't ranked in The Guillotine's final Class A poll, and Gossen wasn't ranked all season until the final poll.


Also placing for the Huskies was Kyler Thier, who earned third place at 145 by getting a pair of victories on Saturday, winning by a 13-0 major decision over Hunter Polikowsky of Chatfield and then emerging with a 10-3 decision over Blake Sheppard of St. Clair/Mankato Loyola in the third-place match. Mathias Liepold, meanwhile, placed sixth for JCC at 127; he won his first two matches of the tournament before concluding with a pair of losses on Saturday.


For Adrian Area, Travis Weiss finished the tourney as the Dragons' lone placer as he came in fifth at 133 pounds. Weiss won a 15-2 major decision over Colton Noble of Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg on Saturday, then won 4-0 over Julio Alejandro of Sibley East for fifth. The 133-pound champion was top-ranked Miklo Hernandez of Pipestone Area.


Also in action for Adrian Area on Saturday was Jackson Jenniges, who lost his wrestlebacks match in a 6-2 decision to Mason Jayers of Minneota at 160. 


For Fulda/Murray County Central, Kaston Clarke took sixth place at 121 pounds. He earned a 7-4 decision over Jackson Dietman of Royalton-Upsala on Saturday, then lost his final two matches by decision.


In state Class AA individual competition, Worthington qualifier and 107-pounder Dominic Larson was edged 13-12 Saturday by Anthony Chilton of Detroit Lakes to just miss placing.

In Super Saturday boys basketball action in the Worthington High School gym, it was: Hills-Beaver Creek 68, Red Rock Central 29; Edgerton 64, Russell-Tyler-Ruthton 45; Southwest Minnesota Christian 93, Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 48; and Murray County Central 62, Westbrook-Walnut Grove 41. Top-seeded Hills-Beaver Creek will meet No. 5 Edgerton and No. 2 Southwest Minnesota Christian will take on No. 3 MCC in Tuesday evening Section 3A South semifinals at WHS.

The Section 3AA South boys basketball playoffs got underway Friday night. Among the scores were: Fairmont knocking off Windom 68-65, Jackson County Central defeating Pipestone Area 62-48; and Luverne beating St. James 79-67. Second-seeded JCC faces No. 3 Fairmont and No. 4 Luverne meets top-seeded Montevideo on Tuesday night in Windom.

The Minnesota West Lady Jays advanced to the Region 13A championship game by taking of Central Lakes, 79-44. They'll play for the regional title and an automatic national tournament at 5 p.m. Sunday against either Minnesota North-Mesabi Range or Ridgewater. 


The Lady Jays, who are ranked No. 1 nationally in NJCAA Division 3, got 18 points, 16 rebounds and three blocked shots from Katrina Schutz as well as 19 points from Sadie Krahling and 10 points from Payton Riemers. Central Lakes shot just 30% from the field and committed 33 turnovers.
