Firefighters from five departments responded to a fire Saturday afternoon at Son-D Farms in rural Adrian, located south of the community’s golf course.

Adrian Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Dallas Sieve reported Sunday that firefighters were dispatched at approximately 4:45 p.m. Saturday. They had been made aware that an explosion had occurred inside the feed mill, where a crew had been doing welding. There were no flames visible when firefighters arrived, Sieve said, but feed products had ignited in a compartment bin that was a closed container.

The Ellsworth Fire Department was first contacted for mutual aid, and upon arrival the Worthington Fire Department was contacted for its aerial ladder truck. Also assisting at the scene were the Lismore and Rushmore fire departments.

Feed products were the only true loss at the site, as Sieve said 20,000 gallons of water was poured into the bin from Worthington’s truck. No injuries were reported. Firefighters remained at the scene until shortly after 9 p.m., and Sieve thanked those from other communities for always being around to help.
